The Thomson Falls in Nyahururu, Kenya is The Place to Be
I stood holding on to the rails that create the borders for the flora around the falls, completely drawn into the whispers of the falling waters. I did not notice the rain, the cold, and the time ticking by. It felt like a was stuck in a sweet spell of peace.
Thomson’s Falls was discovered in the 17th century by a naturist and geologist, who named it after his own father. It is a whopping 74 meters high with a gash of water from River Ewaso Ng’iro, a kilometer from Nyahururu Town, and a few Kilometers from Lake Bolossat. Nyahururu town is mainly an agricultural town, sitting stately on the slopes of Mount Kenya.
The Drive from Nairobi City to Nyahururu is a 3D experience of changing cocktail of landscapes. The lush green forests, the grassland stretches, the sweet scents of blossoming coffee trees, the acres of ranches dotted with horses, and definitely the peace a quiet of a Kenyan Countryside.
So, what is there to be seen at Thomson Waterfall?
The intricate weave of indigenous fauna and flora. The melodiously twittering birds. The beautiful rare Colombus monkeys and the baboons. The breathtakingly picturesque fall of the water causes mighty churns and ripples that rise as mist.
If you love socializing with local tribes, then the Maasai and the Agikuyu of Kenya dressed in their indigenous attire will be there for photography. You should, however, be aware that they charge a small fee to have a picture taken or to wear the Kenyan traditional regalia. You might want your guide to help you negotiate for this.
Do people live in the wild with the colobus monkeys?
Yes. Only you will be a beautiful lodge, built with the colonial architecture in mind. Sir Thomson set up a lodge for the guests when he discovered the falls. It has been in existence since then. The Suites are beautiful, sitting on over 10 acres of neat lawns. The cedar trees and exotic indigenous trees will leave you awed at the beauty of nature.
The highlight for me was the birds’ melodies drowned in the falling murmurs of the water. You can view the waterfall and the whole landscape from the window of your suite.
What else?
I know, right? The nature trail spills you into the fall’s gorge. This is an experience to kill for! At the foot of the fall, you can see the creeping coniferous plantation, go into one of the biggest hippo pools in Kenya and take the most inspirational photographs.
It is important to note that there are charges at the gate. Children are also charged from ages 10 and above.
