Nairobi is the capital and largest city of Kenya. The name “Nairobi” comes from the Maasai phrase ‘Enkare Nyrobi’, which translates to “cool water”.
Nairobi is situated in South-Central Kenya, 140 Kilometers ( 87 miles) south of the Equator. It is surrounded by 113 km² ( 70 mi²) of plains, cliffs, and forest that make up the city’s Nairobi National Park. It is adjacent to the eastern edge of the Rift Valley, and to the west of the city, is The Ngong Hills. Mount Kenya is situated north of Nairobi, and Mount Kilimanjaro is towards the southeast.
Mombasa (in Coast Province) is the second largest city in Kenya, lying on the Indian Ocean and is the host to the Coast Province administration. It has a major port and an international airport.
The city is the centre of the coastal tourism industry. The original Arabic name is Manbasa; in Kiswahili it is called Kisiwa Cha Mvita (or Mvita for short), which means “Island of War”, due to the many changes in its ownership and the battles that brought about the changes in ownership. The town is also the headquarters of Mombasa District which, like most other districts in Kenya, is named after its chief town
