Hello art enthusiast! Have you seen it all in art and design and you feel like you need something different? Maybe you have enjoyed safaris in the wild and now you want something quiet and thoughtful in a beautiful place. The Nairobi Gallery is the best breather from the city’s excitement.

The Nairobi Gallery is located conveniently in the Nairobi Central Business District, on Kenyatta Avenue and Uhuru Highway Roundabout next to Nyayo House.

The Nairobi Gallery is an intriguing place because it is significant in Kenyan History and has been in existence since the Colonial times.

A trip in the past of Nairobi Gallery: It was built in 1913 as a Native Ministry. Settlers used to call it the “The Hatches, Matches and Dispatches” as a result of the many births and deaths that were recorded in this building. Later, it served as the courtroom for Natives who came to Nairobi without a pass.

So, how did a courthouse change to an art Gallery?

nairobi gallery

This happened when The Vice President of Kenya of 1966 – Joseph Murumbi and his Wife, bought the building. They were art enthusiasts who wanted to preserve, protect and promote African Art and Culture in all its forms.

The first exhibition name Dreaming Pictures was conducted by Jakkatari Kawe. This was right after independence and the artists at this time, mostly the pioneer ones like Magdalene Odondo, ExpenditoMwembe Kibala and Geraldine Roberts were displayed here.

The Nairobi Gallery was handed over to the Kenya Museums because of its richness and value in African Art and History. Here is why this Gallery is the best place for Art Enthusiasts in Nairobi:

  1. It is located at Kenya’s Point Zero – there is a black spot in the building which is the starting point of all distances measured from Nairobi to the rest of the Country and Africa. At Point, it is believed to be the centre of Kenya.
  2. The architectural Design of the Nairobi Gallery is epic – let us talk about columns of natural stone, niches, friezes, and pediments. The doors are made of teak. The Gallery is an original Victorian design that is rare. In there, there are colonial safes that have never been opened since independence. One can’t help but wonder what is in there!
  3. The Murumbi African Heritage Collection – this should be the number one attraction point. The collection here ranges from original African Art to textiles from across Africa, stone tablets and books, jewellery and artefacts are here. Check out what is in various rooms further below.
  4. The Murumbis Pan African Stamp Collection – it is said that is second only to the collection by the Late Queen of England.
  5. There is a gift shop – You get to buy a souvenir to take back home.

nairobi gallery

Take a peek at what is in various rooms as you plan your visit to the Nairobi Gallery:

  1. Room 1 – you get to see the sample stamps collected by His and Her Excellency the Late Joseph and Sheila Murumbi. Have you seen Queen Elizabeth’s collection already? It is time to see Murumbi’s collection.
  2. Room 2 – this is full of textile displays from all over Africa. We are talking about Kanga, Kikoi, Kente, Ankara and Okene. Designers interested in African Textiles will have a blast in this room.

There are various clothes worn by African Kings and Queens from various kingdoms with elaborate stories around every attire. Come Travel Kenya Limited will organize a trip of Culture here and at the Bomas of Kenya as well if this is your niche.

  1. Room 3 – This is a display of the Vice president’s Living Room in his Muthaiga Home. There is also a collection of various African furniture from the past. A lot of African Art has been displayed on the walls and along the corridors, you will be absorbed in the profound art.
  2. Room 4 – This is a room full of African Weaponry, Artefacts, and utensils. Did you know Africans made dolls and figurines before colonialism?

The Nairobi Gallery is usually open to the public from 8.30 am and closes at 5.30 pm. The rates for locals, residents and non-residents are affordable and you have the freedom to take as much time as possible in the gallery, taking in every single story.

The Nairobi Gallery is a perfect place to bring children for lessons in history and art as well. It is safe and there are professionals to take you around the rooms, giving you the special stories on every piece of art, artefact, textile and stamp that you will be interested in.

You may need hours in the gallery to exhaustively take in the immense stories inspired by every piece.

Check out the coolest, serene places in Nairobi City where you can have fun for less than $5 in the next article.

A lazy afternoon, fizzling drinks and dripping Kenyan Cuisines will make your Kenyan City Safari memorable. If you add bowling, foosball and pool in a colourful place, your day will be perfect. If you are travelling with your family, especially children, the number one bowling joints in the city will be:

The Village Bowl

bowling

This is at Village Market, along Limuru Road, on the second floor of New Wing. The Village Market is an all-in-one-stop place in matters of food, drinks and fun.  Before getting in for a game or two, you can stop by the nicely stocked curio shops and pick a souvenir of a Moran wooden or stone carving. Or still, you can pack Crispy Samosas for the kids if not a variety of street cuisines.

The Village Bowl is the most recently set up bowling joint in the city, therefore it is modern and exotic. It is an eleven-lane Brunswick Bowling Facility, which is perfect for sports parties and leisure. I am talking latest pool tables, air hockey pitch, foosball pitch and live playing bands.

It is the best place to bring the entire family. Depending on the day of the week, a game goes for between Ksh.300 to Ksh.500 per person.

The Nairobi Club

bowling

We don’t just come here to play golf. There is something close to outdoor bowling here and that’s what makes Nairobi Country Club an epic place for bowling.  Aside: this club was opened in 1901.

The club is a private membership exclusive, sitting on a vast piece of land, serene and extremely classy. If malls suffocate you or maybe you are megalophobic, then Country Club Bowling will do you good.

Here bowling is different: you will be rolling a biased ball that will have to stop close to a smaller white ball called a jack. It is easy to learn and fun to play. Bring your kids along and enjoy the countryside appeal of Upperhill, along Ngong Road. You can play golf afterwards, and enjoy a nice meal and exotic drinks. Later, you can take a hike on The Ngong Hills.

Green bowling will cost you Ksh.2000 per month or Ksh.150 for members and Ksh.200 for guests per game.

However, if you are tired of the outdoors and you just want color, good music, and being indoors…

Strikes – Westgate Mall

bowling

It could be the place you are looking for. Strikes bowling base is normally open from 10.00 am to 8.00 pm on all days of the week. A lazy afternoon or cool evening could be spent here. It has a ten-lane bowling alley, several pool tables, a foosball pitch and air hockey. You can also enjoy full restaurant and bar services. The cocktails at strikes, will blow your mind. They also have a resident DJ and you can ask for the hits you like as you bowl.

A game goes for Ksh.500 or Ksh. 300 depending on the day of the week and time.

The Pins Entertainment at Sarit Center

bowling

Nairobi Westlands has the best nightlife and the some of most exotic fun joints in Nairobi. Pin Entertainment is one of them. The bowling lanes are open all days of the week, from 10.00 am to 8.00 pm. You enjoy 11 bowling lanes and you can have friends come over to compete.

The Pin Entertainment place also has Kids Lanes and you can have a family league organized. You will enjoy art billiards, compete in Karaoke, and go in for a private movie if you enjoy such and your children who are under five years old will be kept busy on their bowling lanes and play zones.

On weekends and holidays, a game will cost you Ksh.500 and on weekdays, you will pay Ksh.350.

Playland Amusement Park

bowling

This is on the ground floor of Nexgen Mall. This is a place for indoor fun including virtual games. The place is open all days of the week, 10.00 am to 8.00 pm.  A game here will cost you Ksh. 500.

Bowling is usually one of the most therapeutic sports of all time. It is cool and relaxing with less sweating. The bowling joints are also very exotic and you can enjoy music, savoury cuisines and drinks. After a wild safari, a hike or a city tour, you can stop at a mall and enjoy a nice evening bowling, biting and drinking. Do you love singing? Ending your day with an extreme Karaoke experience will be the best topping for your bowling night.

carting

Two Rivers Mall is the biggest in East and Central Africa. It is a one-stop place for everything fancy and luxurious in Nairobi. If you are a first-timer in the city, besides Go Karting, you can handle all your business at Two Rivers Mall. At MadMax, there is a 400-meter-long racing lane, 8 Meters wide. Here there are the fanciest, well-maintained cars, with guaranteed safety as a racer and generally. You will enjoy biting and snacks on the same building and window-shop after racing.

Adults pay Ksh.3000 for 10 minutes and Ksh.5000 for 20 minutes. This is also a haven for children and their rates are way lower, with a blast of other merry activities for the kids on the mall.

  1. Whistling Moran’s, Athi River

Go carting

Athi River is in Machakos County about an hour’s drive from Nairobi City. The Whistling Moran is Second on the list because it has the largest racing lanes in the whole of Africa. It is away from the City with topnotch private facilities and the most scenic landscapes you will ever see in the Karting world. The tracks are 8 meters wide. You get to enjoy the double-engine Karts if you are a speed maniac and a slopping kind of track that gives the elevated illusion. Since it is tucked away in the Machakos, about 4 kilometers off the main road on a rough drive, your travel agent should particularly arrange your transport. Come Travel Kenya is best at ensuring that you get to enjoy your outdoor activities without hiccups.

Should we be heading to Machakos after the Safari around the City to cool off or we check out…

  1. The TGRV Circuit at Maai Mahiu First?

A whooping 1.2-kilometer long track awaits you and your adrenaline. The Best bit of racing here, is you get to enjoy amazing landscapes and the Great Rift Valley from the racing angle a spectacular sight.

If they are a wild lot, then you can check out the …

  1. GP Karting Langata

This is usually a bit crowded because it is the most affordable in the city. It is right after Carnivore so you can always check in after a wild safari drive in the National Park. Here you can race day and there are floodlights for night racing.  There are usually enough cars for group racing and you get to enjoy 10 warm-ups, 10 qualifying rounds, 10 Semi Final Laps, and 5 final laps for Ksh.2500 per person for 8 to 10 persons. The tracks are standard and the cars are perfectly maintained. You will be safe chasing after or being chased by friends here.

  1. The Thunder Karts High Octane Racing

carting

The names tell you everything. This is a place of pure speed bliss. It is located near Mang’u Boys and it has relatively new Go-Karts. This is a perfect place to bring family since they have family packages and they have Karting Supervisors for kids. You might want to race down your 9-year-old and see if he or she can beat you. Did you know that Karting is the best entry point for Formula 1 Car Racing? You could just ignite a passion for your child if not yourself.  Your family will also enjoy amazing landscapes here.

These are just a few places in Nairobi and close to Nairobi where you can Go Karting. My Favorite Karting Place is Mombasa Go Kart which is a few miles from Heller Park. The best bit of this is that you can always race at night when the breeze is gentle and the sun is resting its fierceness.  Check it out on Come Travel Kenya Limited’s website when we tell you about go-karting in Mombasa. So, when are we getting that adrenaline pumped high in Karting Race? Or should we go bowling?

Yes. The tracks are standardized and the facility owners ensure that the cars are always in good condition.  There are enough safety kits.

  1. Can Children Participate in a Go-Karting Race?

Do you have plans to travel in 2023? Is your bucket list of destinations full? Are you thinking of finishing off a trip you started a few months or years ago in Kenya? Whether you are visiting for the first time or you are considering visiting again, you can never get enough of Kenya. Kenya is one of the countries in Africa that will offer you a variety of experiences pegged on important historical events or circumstances that you just don’t want to miss.

Among many other reasons, here are some to 15 reasons why Kenya is the best destination in Africa.

  1. Kenya was recently ranked number 4 in the whole of Africa as the country with high-quality life.

Business Insider Africa ranked Kenya at number 4 when it comes to countries with the best quality of life in Africa. This is after South Africa, Tunisia and Morocco. It has a quality index score of 92.54. This should explain the infrastructural advancement and economic solidness of Kenya. Visiting  Kenya will therefore be within the global tourism budget ranges and you are guaranteed quality and class.

Kenya also has the best city life experiences and touring the 4 cities would be a unique experience. You can tour the vibrant, bustling capital of Nairobi,  the city by the lake – Kisumu, the island city of Mombasa or the recently upgraded upcountry city- Nakuru.

Kenya boasts of a warm equatorial climate in most parts of the country with long rains from March through to  June. It is normally sunny and warm, with lush green vegetation covering most parts of the country, and sometimes extremely hot in arid areas and in the savannah. Kenya enjoys both the Northern hemisphere and Southern hemisphere climate since the equator passes across the country. Come get a beautiful tan in the sun.

7. Over 25 million years old Great Rift Valley.

Al-Yusra is pretty affordable. A decent breakfast will set you back Kes. 1000 for two. There is an extensive menu to pick from. A samosa platter goes for Kes. 180 for 2 pieces. Swahili mahamri costs Kes. 100, while Chicken Shawarma costs Kes. 250, and it comes served with a side of fries with salad. A mug of brewed Kenyan tea, plain or spiced goes for Kes. 200 while a double espresso is Kes. 300. Keep in mind, these prices are applicable at the time of writing, in early 2023.

You should note though that breakfast serving ends at noon. Thereafter lunch is served. As a bonus, you should try out Al-Yusra’s Ethiopian Injera.

Coffee and Bagels- Lenana Road

eggs plate

This spot is perfect for coffee lovers. Although not surprising given its name, only coffee is served here and the bagels are made on-site, served fresh, with your choice of filling. Coffee served at this establishment is specialty brew ranging from rich French press coffee to lavish V60 brews and a variety of cold brews. Book lovers will find this coffee house perfect for a morning read accompanied by some great coffee and music. Check out this article in one of our local dailies with a genuine review of Coffee and Bagels. If this sounds like your ideal breakfast, then please do visit and indulge.

Shamba Café-Loresho

pancakes

Shamba Café boasts a wonderful ‘farm-to-plate policy’ that ensures your meal is always served fresh. It is adorned by beautiful rustic décor made from the wood left over from the construction process. Shamba Café sits on an extensive 2-acre piece of land in Loresho where clients are served the freshest of foods and vegetables and a full bar. It is close enough to the city center but away enough from the traffic and brisk city life.

If you need a quiet breakfast with family and friends, a bit late in the morning, a weekend perhaps, then you will find Shamba café quite agreeable. There is plenty of room for children to play and you can bring your pets as well. There is also a farmers’ market on Saturdays where fresh farm produce and handmade products are sold. Shamba café stays closed on Mondays.

Nairobi offers so much in the way of breakfast locations and menu options. These are only a few highlights, but I hope you give Nairobi a chance to impress you and delight your palate.

The Nairobi Festival has captured the heart and soul of Nairobi. This inaugural event was held between 12th and 17th December 2022 and it delivered exactly what it promised, and then some. A vibe of the city indeed. Launched by Nairobi City County, the festival was meant to bring the people of Nairobi together through a shared pop culture (a vibe).

I attended the festival on 16th December, a Friday afternoon hoping to simply check it out and vamoose but I was completely awestruck.

Here is why:

New-Look Uhuru Park

nairobi festival

Uhuru Park had been closed to members of the public for 13 months for renovations. The festival marked the reopening of Uhuru Park to visitors, much to our delight. And it is beautiful! The facelift was done by the then-Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) and it has completely paid off.

The lawns and gardens are now well maintained, there are more clean benches to rest upon, the walkways are well paved and marked, the lighting is beautiful, the water fountains-splashing and the ferries wheel- larger for that extra adrenaline rush.

I could attempt to tell you more about the new-look park, but I wager, you really need to see it for yourself. After the festival, the park will remain open to the public at no cost.

The organization

Despite the large crowds swarming into Uhuru Park, I did not suffer long queues. There was only a single gate (Gate A on Kenyatta Avenue) operating as both the entry and exit.

On entry, I bought my ticket for Kes. 100 by simply dialing the USSD *647# and following a few clear prompts, the amount was deducted from my M-Pesa and within less than 2 mins I received my ticket.

No cash payments were allowed. Security checked and confirmed my ticket, then my hand was stamped and my bag was checked before being let in. The process? Seamless.

Art Exhibitions

photo booth

There were some exquisite art pieces on display at Nairobi Festival. At one stand I saw amazing displays of a series of photographs depicting our wildlife, sceneries, and sunset shots against the city.

Another stall displayed pictures of traditional regalia of different Kenyan communities in black and white, giving them such a vintage look.

Wonderful paintings were also on display, some so beautiful I stood there in awe letting the emotions they stirred sweep over me, a testament to the incredible wealth of talent among our people.

Photo Booths

nairobi

The Nairobi Festival was incredibly intentional about photography. Designated booths were set up beautifully against a backdrop of the event’s banners and branding, flowers, and amazing décor.

These booths granted visitors an opportunity to take wonderful pictures of themselves and their loved ones creating memories to last a lifetime.

Food and Drinks

There was no shortage of food or drink. So many vendors were on site selling our Kenyan tea, samosas, peanuts, juices, ice cream, cotton candy, and a much larger array of snacks. But it was the food trucks that stole the show.

The trucks were decorated to reflect their brands and the vibe of the city. They served proper meals, stews, hotdogs, and even our delicious Kenyan Nyama Choma at affordable rates. There was something for everyone.

Trade

trade

Trade is at the center of any pop culture. How we do business with each other reflects our values and our commitment to one another.

The Nairobi Festival acknowledged this and created a platform for local trade to flourish. So many start-ups got a chance to showcase and sell their products.

I was pleasantly surprised by the young people selling handmade jewelry, crochet items such as sweaters and bikinis and numerous art pieces.

They really made for excellent souvenirs. Corporate brands were also on-site representing the manufacturing, banking, and insurance industries.

What to Look Forward to

This festival was a first of its kind. It is anticipated to be an annual event meant to celebrate one another through our trade, culture, music, fashion, and high art. For an inaugural event, the city exceeded our expectations.

I trust that any lessons learned from organizing this event will be useful in delivering an even better experience to Nairobians next year. If you are ever in the capital during the December festive season, I urge you to pay the festival a visit. It’s a vibe. Truly.

A Brief History of Nairobi City

Like a phoenix, Nairobi rose from ashes in the 1900s after being torched down to stop the spread of plagues. This, I can bet,  you didn’t know!

Nairobi, is a name coined from a Maasai Enkare Nyoropi, meaning a place of Cool Water. It was originally a swamp area, a home of the Maasai community, before the British Colonialist made it a city, to serve as the urban center for Kenya -Uganda railway construction. Nairobi is a city with a river flowing within the city and the only one with a National Park in the city center!

Mombasa was  the capital city of Kenya then but Nairobi, like a seed planted on a wet fertile piece of land, sprouted so fast and grew beyond Mombasa.

After independence in 1963, it remained the Administrative Capital City of Kenya and one of the Largest Cities in Africa.

Currently,  it is the most cosmopolitan city with people from all races, the most secular city, a tourist center, a business hub, most modernized in Africa and the fastest growing.

Nairobi, as its name suggests, is a home of cool waters both literally and metaphorically. Its aesthetic beauty, the vastness of cultures, the hospitality of its people, and its vibrance can only be compared to a bubbling spring.

About Nairobi City

bomas of kenya

Nairobi City is sandwiched between Ngong Hills, Mount Kenya and Mt. Kilimanjaro. It is a high altitude town with a sunny and cool environment most of the year. It is warm from November to March, gets short rains through April to June, then it gets warm again.

Infrastructure in Nairobi City

nairobi roads

Nairobi has elaborate, well developed roads that uplift the face of the city unlike many other cities in East Africa. The city is endowed with Super Highways and an ExpressWay.  This easens traffic and offers alternative roads to destinations. Availability of traceable Uber services makes transport within the city and to the outskirts safe and easier.

The Matatu culture and Bodaboda rides are also an awesome experience for the daring and bold.

Your travel company can also organize travel services for you for the period of time you will be visiting the city.

The main Airport is Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. It is one of the biggest in East and Central Africa. The Wilson Airport is also a smaller alternative and thus the availability of private jets in and out of the city.

There are good hospitals in the city including The Nairobi West Hospital, The Aga Khan University Hospital, The Mater Hospital, Kenyatta Hospital among others that accept Travel Insurance just in case one gets unwell.

Readers, Researchers and Library Enthusiasts have a Modernized  Huge National Library with access to free internet. There are other Libraries open upon request and presentation of permission in Universities and Colleges in the City. The University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, Daystar University among others have well equipped libraries.

Religion and Culture

With the world cup going on in Qatar, one realizes every place has its own rules, and when you go to Rome, you do what Romans are doing. Fortunately, Nairobi is a very secular city, accommodative and vast in culture. The presence of many tribes of Kenya have led to acceptance and flexibility in Kenyans. There are various races and religions as well. Some of the religions practiced include:

All these have their special places of worship where they freely gather without restrictions as long as they are not encroaching on other people’s rights.

Nairobi Arboretum

I stroll into Nairobi arboretum on a Sunday evening, it’s around 4 pm and the sun is hitting the trees just right. This little gem is located just 3kms from Nairobi CBD on State House Road and could be simply described as an embodiment of soothe. The arboretum sits on 30.4 hectares of land bound by the Kirichwa Kubwa River and is a refuge for city dwellers and visitors who are seeking tranquility, solace, and long walks away but not too far from the city center. It boasts over 350 species of exotic and indigenous plants and more than 100 species of birds. It is also home to a significant population of Sykes and vervet monkeys native only to Africa.

Registration and Entry requirements

arboretum

Nairobi Arboretum is one of the most affordable green spaces to access in Kenya. For only Kes. 65 per adult and Kes. 27 for children, one can spend a whole day in this coveted spot. I pay via M-Pesa and proceed to the main entrance just next to the Girl Guide HQ. Next to the registration point is displayed a billboard with extra rates for people seeking multiple activities within the arboretum:

  • Adult Entrance Fee Kes.65 Children Kes.27
  • Car parking fee Kes. 65
  • Photography Kes. 1,332
  • Videography Kes. 3,306
  • Filming Kes.46,400
  • Advert Photography 5,000

What to Do at the Arboretum

You will be spoilt for choice once you arrive at the arboretum. I entered the arboretum intending to only take a small walk within the reserve but three hours later, there I still was. It’s so beautiful that I lost track of time. Between pausing to admire the scenery, avoiding the monkeys, taking pictures of said monkeys (when they are not looking my way), and the several moments I took to rest on the park benches, minutes turned to hours and when I look up it’s almost dark and I had to leave. I intend to go back and I will get there much earlier this time.

The arboretum was established in 1907 by Mr. Basticombe, the then-deputy conservator of forests. It was later published in the Kenya gazette as a public-owned national reserve in 1932. It is currently managed by the Kenya Forest Service and offers recreational and educational benefits for Kenyans and visitors alike. Nairobi Arboretum opens every day from 6 am to 6:15 pm. Below are some of the things you can do at the arboretum:

A Visit to the Tree Centre

arboretum

The Nairobi Arboretum takes great pride in its high-quality display of gardens and lawns that visitors expect and have become accustomed to. This has been made possible by the endless efforts of the tree center located within the reserve.

One of the first things you will notice when you enter the arboretum is that most tree and plant species bear hanging tags labeled with their scientific and English names. In addition, a small description of the plant’s history, origin, and uses is provided. This is a testament to the contribution of staff and volunteers of the tree center who are also available for inquiries on Monday to Friday 8 am to 5 pm.

Students, scholars, researchers, and anyone else interested in the study of Fauna will find the Nairobi Arboretum invaluable.

Picnics

During my visit to the arboretum, I was in utter awe of just how wonderful it was to see groups of people picnicking together in the vast spaces within the reserve. Small intimate groups of people, individuals, larger groups, and even couples were laying their mats, lesos and blankets on the ground and enjoying their packed lunches and snacks. All you need to do is pick a nook you like and have fun.

Weekends are the busiest times at Nairobi arboretum. A weekday morning on the other hand is best if you are looking for some quiet, a walk, or even meditation.

Jogging

arboretum walk

The natural dirt trails at the arboretum are excellent for jogging. Due to its large vegetation cover of tall trees, shrubs, and fruit trees, the arboretum provides an instant reprieve from the scorching sun. It’s also a worthy location for practice that athletes in a personal or professional capacity can utilize.

Dog Walking

Pets are allowed at the arboretum and must be on a leash and in the care of their owners. There is enough space for them to play and run around, this destination ensures that no member of the family is left behind.

Photography

Young people shooting Tik-Tok trends, professional photographers with their clients doing their thing, and a few people taking selfies while others simply taking videos of the reserve is common to experience while at the reserve. The natural beauty is so inviting for photography and I urge you to come travel Kenya and experience this for yourself too.

A Few Notable Rules

  • Do not feed the monkeys.
  • Cycling, Bluetooth speakers, single-use plastic, chairs, and ball games are not allowed.
